Before beginning this review let’s start with a quick intro of the two.
DC Films is an American film studio and is one of the subsidiaries of Warner Bros. and is committed to the production of films based on the characters from DC Entertainment. The current president of DC Films is Walter Hamada. It is the producer of films like Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice. It has released a total of 34 movies till now.
Marvel Studios is an American film and television studio and is a subordinate of Walt Disney Studios which is a division of The Walt Disney Company. It is the production house of the Marvel Cinematic Universe films and is based on the characters that appear in Marvel Comics Publications. It has released a total of 23 films since the year 2008 ranging from Iron Man (2008) to Spider-Man: Far from Home (2019). The current president of Marvel Studios is Kevin Feige.
Both DC Films and Marvel Studios have shown their capabilities and competence of not only providing world-class comic books but also blockbuster Hollywood movies. But let’s have a look at which of the two studios is generating the most bang for its buck. Hundreds of millions of dollars in ticket sales seems magnificent but in reality, if the production budgets and marketing expenditures are costly then the pure profits seem to lack behind.
And when we take a look at the real numbers, Marvel Studios is the explicit winner having claimed nine out of the ten highest-grossing movies ever produced by both the studios. Undoubtedly, the top spots are claimed by the Infinite Legends-Avengers: Infinity Wars and Avengers: Endgame. DC Films too made Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League but neither of the films met the expectations of the maker either commercially or desperately. Both these movies were made by DC Films in a team-up but after looking at the disappointment the films gave DC has emphasized standalone movies that have really found a considerable amount of success. Aquaman by the DC Films is the highest-ever grossing film of DC Films and is the only one among the Top ten movies by both studios.
The next factor after having a look at the pure profits is the Return on Investment (ROI) generated and here too Marvel Studios (387 per cent) outclass DC Films (343 per cent). But the mid-budget film genre experiment in Joker helped the Studios earn a tremendous ROI of 1949 per cent. The pure profits earned by DC Films was more than $500 million.
It is hard to deny that Marvel is a clear-cut winner between the two in each and every term be it Fresh Content, Return on Investment or Box Office Collections. But it does not mean that DC Films is totally overthrown from the competition. Both studios will produce more films in the following years, so let me know what you’re excited about and what you’d like to see more in the near future.
