WELCOME MY DEAR READERS
Today's topic is about the value of discipline in today's life
WHAT IS DISCIPLINE??
Discipline is submission to a prescribed code of conduct. It implies control over one’s whims, impulses, desires .It is a necessary condition of civilized life .It creates harmony and order and its absence leads to confusions and disorder. It imposes certain restrictions upon one’ freedom of action but these restrictions are necessary for the well- being of society as well as the individual. ARISTOTLE, the famous Greek philosopher thought that a society cannot exist without discipline, so he said, “Discipline is the obedience to rules formed by the society for the good of all”
The progress of a country depends upon the discipline of its citizens. Countries like Japan are in the forefront of advanced countries today primarily because the people there are highly disciplined. They perform their assigned duties properly and do not allow anything to distract them. When they wish to protest against any injustice they put black badges on their shirts, register their protest peacefully but never disrupt the work. They voluntarily obey the rules framed by their organization .Their discipline is the secret of their strength. On the other hands, in developing countries like India people violate the rules or the established code of conduct on the slightest pretext. They often break rules to show that they are important or enjoy power. The traffic rules, for example, insist that we should stop our vehicle before Zebra line, but how many people actually follow this rule? The chaotic traffic on our roads is symptomatic of our nation malaise. We take pride in jumping queues and getting our jobs out of turn. We show our lack of discipline while boarding or getting down buses and metros .Unruly scenes outside booking windows of cinema halls and theatres reveal our attitude towards rules.
IMPORTANCE OF DISCIPLINE AND WHAT WILL HAPPEN IF WE WILL NOT FOLLOW IT??
Indiscipline leads to corruption. Whenever people do not observe rules or break laws for petty gains they have to either deceive the law enforcing agencies or bribe them .To get the jobs done out of turn or do what law does not permit , one has to grease the palms of pliable officials . People resort to all sorts of corrupt practices to achieve those selfish aims which are against the rules. Our political leaders are perhaps the worst culprits in this regard. For them no rule is sacred. They twist laws for their selfish ends. The law makers are the law breakers in our country. The recent scams, scandals and other dishonest deeds indicate that they consider themselves above law. Since leaders are emulated by officers as well as general public respect for law is disappearing fast. Discipline gives strength to character. Professional growth depends upon discipline. Consider the case of educational institutions. Wherever students and teachers become undisciplined the standard of education falls. The rise in the number of unfair means cases in examination as is an example of lack of discipline. Students and teachers indulge in activities which cannot be justified in any way. Professional excellence of engineer, doctor or an administrator is adversely affected by indiscipline. If they are irregular with their work or do not observe punctuality their work will lose quality. Doing work with honesty is the sign of discipline and this alone can help one to get satisfaction from the work.
In the modern times we find discord everywhere. Family ties weakening and clashes are becoming frequent between close relations. Individuals are not able to control their tempers. They are not able to lead happy and fruitful lives. The main reason for most of the problems is the lack of discipline. It is indeed essential for people to obey the rules voluntarily and exercise self – control. This would be good for the society as well as the individual.
