Let's start with learning about a simple term called 'ART' , some of you might think that art only involves painting or crafts. NO , there's much more to Arts than just painting.
Art is a diverse range of human activities involving the creation of visual, auditory or performing artifacts like painting ,music, theatre , film ,dance, which express the creator's imagination, ideas, or technical skills.
Earlier,Arts was given no or very little importance in school curriculum , but now things have changed a bit.
Parents and teachers have started realizing how important learning arts is for the overall development of a child.
Gone are the days when a student was only categorized on the basis of his/her academic qualification, now having innovative and creative skills are as much as important as grades.
But there are exceptions(especially in India), though the recent education policy introduced in 2020 will very much help in boosting the importance of Arts , as some parents still tend to force their children into focusing only on academics and it's a high time to realize that Academics and Arts go hand in hand.
“Art washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life.”
Years of research show that Art is closely linked to almost everything that we as a nation say we want for our children and demand from the schools: academic achievement, social and emotional development, civic engagement, and equitable opportunity.
Training about Art broadens mind and perspective of children, increase their critical thinking , verbal and cognitive skills.
Why include Arts in Education?
When a child realizes what he/she really want to do , or where is his/her interest lies at , and then starts to do it, it is when there is an increase in confidence level of that child. For example , if someone is introvert and likes to read , when that particular person joins a reading club and express his/her thoughts on a particular book, that's how his/her public speaking skills improve.
While many find the value of arts education to be the ways in which it impacts student learning, I feel the learning of art is itself a worthwhile endeavor. A culture without art isn’t possible. Art is at the very core of our identity as humans. It is the greatest gift we can give students in form of understanding, appreciation, and ability to create art.
If a child lacks communication skills like talking with his/her parents or friends , that's when learning art prove to be an asset. If he/she likes to sing , music becomes a tool to communicate things to others and open his/her mind on various things.
Focusing on Arts helps in developing a creative mind in children ans later helps them in standing different from the crowd.A student who is trained in Art always comments that art lessons acted as an outlet for releasing the pressures of studying as well as those of everyday life.
~Gives an edge
Suppose two people appear in an interview , one has only a degree relevant to the position he/she wants and other has a degree as well as certificates in various other activities/competitions like debate ,sports, music etc.
Now , it's quite easy to determine who will have better chances of being selected. That's where learning Arts helps you even if you don't want to make career in that particular field.
To all the elders out there , many of you haven't had the chance to focus on Arts during your school days due to various reasons , but hope you realize now that how important it is for children.Motivate them to do or learn something extra which will be a tool to develop their holistic development!
